Artists of Krasnoyarsk, Siberia

We were invited to Krasnoyarsk by Professor Anatoli Levitan, Dean of the Krasnoyarsk Academy of Arts, and patriarch of a dynasty of St. Petersburg artists in 2004.

Krasnoyarsk is the biggest nickel smelting town on earth, a derelict cultural desert if the guide books are to be believed. However, it has the best Art School system we have ever seen anywhere.

The Art Institute under Professor Aleksander Pokrovski, and Professor Levitan’s postgraduate Academy are vibrant centres of excellence, producing really good artists and usung the very best as teachers.

We were able to see the studios of three generations of Krasnoyarsk artists, and were highly impressed by all of it.
